Countdown to Christmas: A Week-by-Week Planning Guide

Some of us are “wing it and hope for the best” people. And some of us have a spreadsheet. If you’re the spreadsheet type (hi, we love you, we are also you), this one’s for you: a week-by-week countdown to get you from “haven’t thought about it yet” to “fully ready and drinking cocoa by the fire” without the December panic spiral.

12 Weeks Out (Early October): The Vision Phase

Sit down as a family and talk about what you want this season to feel like. Cozy? Big and social? Low-key and simple? This becomes your filter for every decision from here on out.

10 Weeks Out: Budget and Gift List

Set your holiday budget and start a running gift list for everyone on it. You don’t need to buy anything yet, just get names and ideas down before the good gifts get bought up by everyone else who read this same guide.

8 Weeks Out: Decor Inventory

Pull out last year’s decor bins (see, this is why we labeled them) and do an honest inventory. What needs replacing? What are you ready to retire? Order anything you need now, before shipping times get wild.

6 Weeks Out: Cards and Calendar

Update your holiday card address list and start blocking off your family calendar - cookie exchanges, school events, tree-cutting trips, all of it. Getting this on the calendar early means way less “wait, we have three things on the same night” chaos later.

4 Weeks Out: Decorate!

This is prime tree-and-lights territory. Make a night of it - snacks, music, the whole production. It’s genuinely one of the best family nights of the year.

3 Weeks Out: Baking and Gifting Prep

Start any freezer-friendly baking, wrap gifts as they arrive, and finalize plans for any cookie exchanges or gift swaps.

2 Weeks Out: Final Details

Confirm travel plans, wrap remaining gifts, prep your Christmas Eve and Day menus, and double check you’ve got stocking stuffers covered.

1 Week Out: Just Enjoy It

Everything’s basically done. This week is for slowing down, soaking it in, and actually being present for the season you spent ten weeks planning for.

Want the shortcuts built in? Check out our holiday guides for done-for-you checklists and shopping lists at every stage of the countdown.

However you countdown, here’s to a December with a lot less scramble and a lot more joy. ⏳
