When To Decorate For Halloween

I push seasons. It’s my thing.

By mid-May I have tried on every article of white clothing in my wardrobe, and planned each summer activity for my family. Why? Because it’s fun to be excited for things! How is that relevant to the topic of the day?

Well, because in reality, I may not be the most trustworthy source for defining just when to decorate for halloween. By this time of the year, I am already sipping coffee with pumpkin spice creamer and setting my out of office hours for back to school shopping.

But if you want my take - and if you’re reading this I assume you’re at least curious -my answer is start planning now, and put up the decorations at the end of September. And there is a crude math that justifies at least starting your plans for fall in early August. And this is why:

Reason #1: The Calendar Monster is Coming (and He's Hungry for Your Free Time!)

We all know how it goes. One minute you're basking in the lazy days of summer, and the next BAM! School's back, soccer practice is every Tuesday and Thursday, little Lily has dance on Wednesdays, and oh yeah, remember that family camping trip we talked about? Suddenly, your perfectly blank fall calendar looks like a toddler went wild with a box of crayons.

Starting your fall planning in early August gives you a HUGE head start. It's like staking your claim on those precious weekend afternoons before the calendar monster gobbles them all up. Think of it as a preemptive strike against fall frenzy!

Reason #2: The Early Bird Gets the Best Pumpkin (Patch Reservations!)

Seriously though, think about all those amazing fall activities we love: apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, Halloween parades, local festivals… Guess what? The awesome ones? They're already getting their dates locked in!

If you have a must-do fall tradition or a specific event your family would be heartbroken to miss, NOW is the time to do a little digging. Check their websites, follow them on social media, and get those dates penciled in (or better yet, officially booked!). Trust me, you don't want to be scrambling in October only to find out that the tickets are sold out or your favorite weekend slot is gone.

Being an early planner means you get your pick of the litter – the prime times, the best events, and zero disappointment for your little goblins.

Reason #3: Because Planning = Excitement (and Less Stress for YOU!)

Let's be honest, a little bit of anticipation can make the mundane a whole lot more fun! Flipping through fall festival brochures, dreaming about the perfect Halloween costumes, and imagining the smell of apple cider donuts – it's all part of the joy!

Plus, getting a head start on planning means you're not cramming everything in at the last minute when everyone is already stressed and overwhelmed. You can spread out the tasks, get the kids involved in choosing activities, and actually enjoy the process instead of feeling like you're running a fall-themed marathon.

So, my fellow fun-loving parents, take this as your friendly nudge. While the sun is still shining and the days are long, carve out a little time to peek ahead at the gloriousness that is fall. A few minutes of planning now can translate into weeks of happy family memories later.

Soooo… When To Decorate For Fall

This is my math - and keep in mind that this is my very subjective, personal take that aligns with my family calendar. Yay!

Nov. 1 - Holiday Kick Off

Oct. 1 - Halloween Decoration Kick Off

Sept. 1 - Fall Decor Kick Off

Aug. 1 - Fall Planning Begins!!

Hope that answers your questions and gives you justification for all things you were already planning!
